Description
The SONATA project aims to improve earthquake safety in Italy’s built environment, with a special focus on non-structural elements that significantly impact economic losses and recovery. Using innovative tools like the 9DLAB shaking table, sensors, AI, and image recognition, SONATA will develop advanced methods to assess seismic damage and create accurate fragility functions. These tools will be integrated into a prototype system and tested through a real-world case study to support effective risk management and decision-making.

Multiple SONATA contributions at ECEE 2026
The group will present four SONATA project updates at the 18th European Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Berlin, Germany, covering sensor-based damage assessment, image-based detection of non-structural elements, shake-table prototype testing, and the overall system architecture.
First experimental tests completed
The first set of experiments on three gypsum partition walls (drywalls) were tested in the 9DLAB facility at Eucentre
Project officially underway!
The SONATA has officially started with 3 new members joining the team.
